Monogram 1/8-scale 1932 Ford Roadster "Big Deuce"
Monogram's series of 1/8-scale street rods and sports cars were among the most successful model car kits of the early-to-mid-1960s. Following its "Big T" kit and its variants, Monogram tooled a 1/8-scale replica of a 1932 Ford that was, by far, the most accurate 1932 Ford model kit. Buildable as only a period street rod, in either full-fendered or fenderless "Highboy" versions, the kit tool was updated in 2003 by Revell to add a hot-rodded Ford Flathead V-8 option to go with the original Chevy V-8, along with steelie wheels and tall/narrow big 'n little tires, and updated decals. All the great vintage parts of the original kit remained as well. This latest "3 in 1" version is the one you want to find and build.

The best 1934 Ford kits were a commercial disappointment and have never been reissued. The team at Revell announced two all-new 1934 Ford kits to be introduced in 1988. They made the choice to tool the kits in 1/16 scale instead of 1/24 or 1/25 scale. Let's take a closer look at these masterpiece kits.

The two kits were constructed to allow mixing and matching of components from both of the kits to provide additional building options. The instructions credited the talents of Boyd Coddington and artist Brian Bordon in the kit's design, and it showed. The three-window coupe and Phaeton included full fenders with smoothie running boards, and a fenderless Highboy building version with funky one-off lower roll pans that covered the front suspension and were not representative of contemporary 1/1 scale rods of the era. The coupe contained an Inglese fuel injection setup for the SBC engine, and the Phaeton had an Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley four-barrel carb, and milled-style air cleaner. The couple featured deep 'n deeper style Halibrands, and the Phaeton included Boyd Coddington-style billet aluminum wheels.

Both models shared a replica of a 1:1 scale TCI chassis with Kugel independent front suspension, and the coupe ran a solid gear axle located by four-bar radius rods and the Phaeton featured a billet-style Jaguar IRS. The interior was late-1980s contemporary, which is to say still reasonably current for today. The kits were finished with two sets of graphic decals for each, along with some beautiful box art.

The bodies were masterfully rendered, and all the parts were au-currant for 1988 1:1 scale street rods. Alas, the 1/16 scale was the kiss of death, and the kits have never been reissued. In my judgment, the kits would have been successful much like the later Revell 1932 Ford series, had they been rendered in 1/25 scale, which amounts to a huge missed opportunity for Revell and the model-building community. An inquiry to Revell indicated that it is not possible to pantograph the tool down to 1/24 scale. But if you build in 1/16 scale, these kits are a "must" for you to track down and build.
MPC 1/32 1934 Ford Sedan Delivery
There were a number of 1934 Fords issued by various manufacturers in scales smaller than 1/25, mostly tooled in the 1960s. We've chosen just one as an example of this kit genre. MPC's 1/32 1934 Ford Sedan Delivery carries the simplicity of small-scale snap kits, but the body proportions are spot-on and the result is an accurate small-scale replica of perhaps the most attractive of all 1934 Ford body styles. My kit example wears "Dukes of Hazzard" box art and decal livery and dates from 1980, but there were probably other releases of the kit. If you build it you will need to address the "4x4" ride height and the unrealistic simplified bumper mounts, but the rest of the kit provides the basis for a very accurate small-scale curbside sedan delivery.
