The History

Chevrolet was in the sales driver’s seat in the 1960s, as it churned out hit after hit as we were all busy seeing the USA in our Chevrolets.

But even then, its cars were growing in size and stature so quickly that by 1964 Chevy realized it needed a more moderate-sized model to compete with Ford’s Fairlane. Chevelle was Chevy’s answer, and it too was a resounding success.

Not only was Chevelle more modest in dimensions, it handled better. And when Chevy started souping it up, quickly became one of the earliest muscle cars.

During the past few years, Auto World has created a variety of Chevelles, but now goes back to the first generation, built for model years 1964-1968. Again, Auto World creates a well-detailed 1/18 scale model at an attractive price, making this offering especially appealing to a wide audience.

The Model

Auto World’s review model is the Tuxedo Black convertible version of the 1967 Chevelle SS, honoring the 50th anniversary of the first 396 Chevy V-8. Can it really be that long ago?

As with other models in its American Muscle series, Auto World’s Chevelle features an opening hood and trunk, along with its doors. Production also is limited to 1,002 models.

For 1967, the Chevelle SS 396 dropped the Malibu name and came in coupe and convertible models, each packing an L35 325-horsepower V-8. But there also were two racier engine options: the L34 that kicked out 350 horses, and the L78, creating 375 horsepower. The latter is what this SS model features.

This model also has the blacked-out grille and chrome louvered hood vents, which were nonfunctional on the 1:1 car. SS markings grace the nose and tail, along with red horizontal pinstripes along the lower body sides and accented by redline tires.

AutoWorld also includes chrome trim over the wheel wells and trim strips along the car’s lower edges, plus chrome door handles, window frames, wipers, and antenna. The rear quarter-panels also include Super Sport logos that accentuate the capital S in each word.

The orange, monster V-8 and its compartment are nicely detailed for the price, as is the underbody, including dual exhausts.

Creating an eye-catching color combo, this model features a bright red interior, including the retracted and covered convertible top, visors, and well-shaped seats with silver trim around the front seat backs, console, and dash. There’s a wood-look 3-spoke steering wheel and white cue-ball shifter, plus a well-detailed dash with radio, gauges, and a stationary push-button lock on the glove box.

This is a sharp-looking model, to fill the convertible Chevelle gap in anyone’s collection. Price and detail, coupled with an attractive display box with a big window, make this Auto World Chevelle an easy car to collect.
