1960 Rambler
JoHan no. 1104
Model Type: Assembled promo
Molded Colors: White
Scale: 1/25
MSRP: $44.95
Pros: Unusual subject
Cons: Cast-resin body rough around the edges, mold-separation lines on tires

A 1960 Rambler uni-body promo is easy to spot in any collection - the unusual model is essentially a stripped-down four-door body designed to tout American Motors' pioneering "frameless" unitized-body construction. Although the promo has wheels and tires, it's missing its interior, trim, and most of its forward body panels.

JoHan now offers a cast-resin copy of this unusual promo. Produced for the company by Best Resin, the model's body is cast in white resin and arrives unpainted. Music-wire axles wear chrome-plated Rambler hubcaps and generic vinyl tires.

I decided to airbrush my model steel to give it a fresh-from-the-assembly-line look. Prepping the model with fine-grit sandpaper revealed a few rough spots, particularly in the interior and around the lower edges of the body; I expected a little cleaner casting for the price.

Aside from painting the body, I removed the mold-separation line from the vinyl tires and painted the Rambler "R" in the center of each hubcap.

Thanks to JoHan, promo collectors and American Motors enthusiasts alike can now add this unique Rambler model to their collections.
