In 2003, Revell-Monogram released its first Jimmie Johnson Lowe's Monte Carlo kit. This release is based on the same kit, with minor updates to the decal sheet.

The moldings are crisp and clean, with little flash and mold lines. The prepainted glass insert is a huge plus, as is the nicely done newer-style driver's seat. There is also a driver figure, with all of the driver's uniform markings included on the decal sheet.

The build should be no surprise to anyone who has built a Revell-Monogram NASCAR kit during the last few years. Few changes have been made in the construction of R-M's NASCAR kits, and the models do not reflect some of the latest updates.

This kit does include the decal gauges for the nicely engraved dash with open gauges, but the dash itself is outdated. For the last two years, the race cars have had a new dash configuration that requires all of the onboard electronics to be placed within a cutout in the dash on what would be the passenger's side.

The kit features hollow tires that are rather difficult to work with. I deviated from past builds and decided to try to make the kit tires work. For some reason the kit tires seemed to work just fine, and I was relatively pleased with the looks of the finished product.

The longest and trickiest part of this kit is applying the decals. You simply paint the body blue (I used Tamiya's Mica Blue), and all of the remaining colors and markings are decals.

Every bit of silver is on the decal sheet, so you will need a really good decal-setting solution. Revell-Monogram decals are of good quality, but do not like to conform to compound curves.

Working one panel at a time, it took me several days to complete the decals. You will have to give the solution time to work, and then massage the decals carefully to remove any wrinkles. One panel at a time, let the solution work, come back later and smooth out all of the wrinkles.

This all adds up to multiple days to complete the process, but it is time well spent. With patience comes an almost flawless rendition of the 2004 Lowe's Jimmie Johnson Monte Carlo.

I recommend this kit to anyone. You must like the decaling process if you are to enjoy building this kit - which, insanely enough, I do.
