1976 Chevy Caprice
AMT/Ertl no. 38454
Model Type: Injection-molded
styrene
Molded Colors: Gray, clear
Scale: 1/25
MSRP: $12.50
Pros: Nice body and grille; simple to build
Cons: Brittle chrome; plenty of flash; prominent ejector-pin marks

This model has all the hallmarks of a mid-1970s AMT car kit: one-piece chassis with suspension molded on, metal axles that allow the wheels to turn, a simplified interior, and a chrome-plated fret. A set of vinyl tires is also included.

The block halves needed clamping, and most of the engine components needed filing to fit properly. Many of the parts were plated, but the brittle chrome was easily damaged during cleanup.

Molded in light gray, the one-piece body captures the look of the two-door Caprice well, and needed just a little cleanup - mostly around the taillights.

I painted my Caprice with Nassau Blue Metallic, topped with clear gloss, from Testor's Model Master Custom Lacquer System. The chrome trim is adhesive foil.

The grille is nicely molded and plated; I gave it a wash of thin black enamel.

The kit includes a trailer that goes together quickly, and features a nice pair of mag wheels. It can be posed in the traveling position or with the ramps deployed for loading. Large ejector-pin marks mar the skidplate.

The model looks and sits like one of the 1970s behemoths. It's a simple kit, but one with possibilities.
