Deal's Wheels Trans Um Tirebird
Revell-Monogram No. 85-1747
Model Type: Injection-molded styrene
Molded Colors: White, clear red
Scale: N/A
Pros: Retro look
Cons: Flash on many parts; some parts-fit issues
I missed the Deal's Wheels series of models when they were originally issued many years ago, so when this reissue arrived in our offices, I thought, "This will be a cool, fun, weekend build" to see what I'd missed back in the day.

But when I opened the box, I could see a great deal of flash on many of the parts; and during construction, several areas needed quite a bit of sanding and/or filling to get the parts fit correct. That reduces the "fun factor" in this kind of build, and makes it more like a regular buildup instead of a quick, fun project.

After checking the body/chassis fit, I decided to assemble all body parts first, so they could be sanded and filled as a unit. After some deliberation, I decided to paint the body gold, because I wanted to try Testor's new One Coat lacquer. The color is fine for the 1970s effect I wanted, but for a more-serious project I think I would clear over the paint.

The two-piece tires are hollow, and are prone to distortion and warping; it's a little difficult to get them lined up properly.

Dave "The Big" Deal passed away last October, and he leaves behind a legacy of auto art and caricature kits that have brought enjoyment to many.
