The latest Ferrari California is a tribute to the original California Spyder, introduced in 1957 in long-wheelbase form and then in 1960 as a short- wheelbase version. This new version features a retractable hard top, and is the first V-8-powered Ferrari with the engine up front.

This is the sister release to the open- top version reviewed in a previous issue. 

Body and interior parts are crisply molded in red plastic, with no flash to speak of, and nearly invisible mold lines.  Chassis parts are molded in gray, with the same level of quality. 

Wheels and various trim and detail bits are nicely plated in bright chrome.  Windows are bagged separately, and are very clear and not too thick.

The base for the chassis assembly is the aerodynamic undertray. It has very good detail and features a separate exhaust and chrome-plated heat shield.  My model’s undertray had a slight twist, but seemed flexible enough that it straightened out when I snapped it into the body. 

The poseable front suspension is a little simplified, but is good enough for what is actually visible on the finished model. The rear suspension is also a little on the simple side, but does include the rear transaxle, though it’s almost completely hidden. 

Brake disks and calipers have good detail, but are oddly mounted between the wheel halves – a bit impossible on the real thing. I painted the spokes of the inner wheels flat black to ensure they wouldn’t be seen. 

There is also a full engine – sort of.  It certainly isn’t in the same class as, say, a Fujimi enthusiast kit engine, but it has enough to get the point across satis-factorily for as much of it that is visible.

The interior is probably the best part of this kit – probably thanks to its open- top sister. When I was researching the different trim options on the 1:1 car, I noticed that the parts are broken down so that painting and detailing is simple. 

The top of the tunnel is separate, so it’s possible to flock almost the entire floor pan, except for a portion of the back seat area, which is easy to mask.

The door panels, front and rear seats, center armrest, and lower dash are all separate parts, just where the 1:1 car trim colors split. Molded-in detail is good throughout. Decals are included for the instruments, dash, and
Ferrari crest on the steering wheel.

The body captures the voluptuous lines of the California well. Mold lines are almost nonexistent, and parts fit is excellent. The hinged hood will even stay up by itself! Precut masks would have been nice for painting the black trim around the windows. 

My reference images show that the lights above the exhaust should have a smoke tint to them – something the instructions didn’t mention, and I probably should have gone a little darker with them.

It would have been nicer to have separate exhaust tips too, but that’s minor and could easily be done with some aluminum tubing. 

Decals for the Ferrari scripts and nose badge complete this beautiful little kit. There is also a nice selection of European-style license plate decals, but sadly, no US-style plates.

I am extremely impressed with the way this kit went together. Previously, if the same car was available from Revell and a Japanese manufacturer, I likely would have bought the Japanese kit. This kit has changed my mind. Thumbs up, Revell!
