Removing tampo printing

RELATED TOPICS: TAMPO
Tip: Regarding how to remove tampo printing from die-cast metal models ("Tips and Tech" August 2002), allow me to add my experience. I've successfully removed tampo printing from 1/24 scale NASCAR diecast-metal models for years using lacquer thinner and cotton swabs. The ink used in the tampo process reacts quickly to lacquer thinner while leaving the underlying paint unharmed. Dip the cotton swab into a bottle of thinner then roll the tip over the printing to be removed. Don't scrub - use gentle wipes and the printing will come right off. After all the printing has been removed, any fogging or residual ink can be eliminated by dipping the edge of a soft cloth into the thinner, letting it dry, then carefully wiping down the entire body.
