Raised markings for gauges

RELATED TOPICS: GAUGE
Tip: I'd like to share the method I use for making raised markings on dashboard gauges stand out.

I paint the dashboard, using silver paint from an aerosol can. While the silver coat is still wet, I apply flat black over the entire gauge cluster. When all the paint is dry, the raised instrument detail pops out clearly.

I've tried this same operation on a luggage carrier on a 1930 Rolls-Royce. The hinges and latches popped out through the silver, while the overall case remained flat black.

I don't know what causes this phenomenon, but it enabled me to escape the tedious drybrushing step. I wonder what other interesting paint results could be achieved using this method on a somewhat larger canvas?
