Effective wet-sanding

You're probably tired of hearing this by now, but all of us at the T&T Workshop just love imaginative, homemade, cheap tips that make our modeling time more productive. A wonderful case in point is an idea presented by Ken Kitchen of Kitchen Table Resins. We've seen quite a variety of sanding methods over the years, but this one is one of the most-ingenious yet:

"Awhile back, I cast some wheels and tires for the guys in my club, and a group project. When I tried to glue the tire halves together, I realized that I didn't have the cleanest edges on the castings, and the surfaces didn't mate too well. Sanding would be required, so the two pieces would sit tightly against each other. Then inspiration struck, and I came up with the most-effective sanding method I've ever found.

"I took a lid from a plastic yogurt container (any lid with a lip would work), then cut a piece of 400-grit sandpaper to the diameter of the inside of the lid. Placed the lid upside-down and taped the sandpaper inside the lip with double-stick tape. I then placed some water into the inverted lid and started sanding the flat surfaces of the resin parts.

"The water contained by the lip acts as the perfect wet-sanding medium, and the flat sandpaper serves as the perfect sanding surface for flat parts. It works great, keeps the dust under control, and creates superflat surfaces on resin parts in no time at all."

We were hard-pressed to find any yogurt in the Workshop Dining Area, so we had to crack open a few containers of cream cheese and butter instead. We found that those lids work great for this technique, too.

Thanks for the great Tip, Ken.
