Identifying sandpaper grits

Tip: When you buy sandpaper, the grit is only identified in several places on the back of the sheet and it becomes difficult to identify a little piece that is torn from the big sheet.

To identify the grits, I color-code and dust a coat of spray paint on the back of each grit: red is 400, blue is 600, etc.

This is especially helpful if you have pieces of several grits on the bench. I don’t do this for wet-sanding, because of the possible contamination that may occur if the ID color gets into the front of the sheet.
