Tip of the Month: Mexican blankets

Mexican blankets
A quick E-mail question from Frank Brandao: “My next project is a 1/25 scale rat rod. Do you know if scale Mexican blankets are available to use as upholstery?”

Frank, there are Mexican blanket decals on the market, but making your own blankets is as simple as cutting thread, and the finished product will have more dimension than a flat decal.

Select a variety of brightly colored thread and cut a bunch of pieces to length, depending on the width and length of the blanket you want. Secure a piece of masking tape to a flat surface with the sticky side up, then lay the threads on the tape one brightly colored piece at a time.  The design possibilities are endless and are, of course, up to you. When you’re satisfied with the result, trim all four sides of the blanket to suit your needs.

To add the fringe, turn the blanket over and attach a small piece of double-stick transparent tape to the two ends.  Cut pieces of white thread, secure them to the tape, trim the fringe to length, and you’re done!
