How to scratchbuild a bar grille
Q: I’m looking for a bar grille for a 1/25 scale Monogram 1959 Chevy Impala (Kit 2454). I had a 1:1 1959 Chevy in my younger days, and am trying to build the model to reflect how neat I had it. Always wanted a bar grille, but back then they were expensive, so I’m hoping to find one in scale for my Monogram model. Do you have any suggestions on how to locate one?

Instead of banging your head against the well trying to find a bar grille that might not even fit your Chevy, why not engage in a simple scratchbuilding project that will give you exactly what you’re looking for?

Trace your model’s grille opening on a piece of card stock, to use as a guide.  Draw a series of horizontal lines where you want you grille bars to be. Using brass or styrene strip stock, cut three or four vertical brackets that will fit in the opening and support the grille bars, and stick them to the cardstock template with double-stick transparent tape. Get some 1/16" aluminum rod or tubing, cut the bars to length, polish them, and epoxy or super-glue them to the vertical supports. When the unit is dry, pop it off the card and install it on the model.
