Tip of the Month: Scratchbuilt wheelie bars

Scratchbuilt wheelie bars
Our Tip of the Month started out as a question from Dwayne Yarema of Villa Park, Ilinois:

“Is there anybody in the aftermarket field that makes wheelie bars for drag race cars? Either that, or is there an easy way to create them myself?

The Magic Words, Dwayne, are “create them myself.” Why settle for something that’s almost good enough, when you can custom-build wheelie bars that will fit your needs perfectly? The process is fairly simple, and can result in a satisfying scratchbuilding project.

Go through some magazines or speed equipment catalogs and find a set of wheelie bars you like. Draw a quick set of full-size plans of each component that you can use as a template.

Build each section of the wheelie bar using your material of choice, which will probably be styrene rod from the local hobby shop.

Assemble the pieces and add a couple of brackets to mount the wheelie bar to the frame, paint and mount them, and your drag car is ready to go.
