How to dispose of paint thinner

Q: Although I’ve been trying to use non-toxic acrylic paints whenever possible, I still use paint thinner, lacquer thinner, and some other environmentally unfriendly solvents.

Until now, I’ve just been storing the old thinner in containers out in the garage. What’s the best way to dispose of this stuff?

Ken: As much as we might not want to admit it, our hobby does indeed expose us to some nasty chemicals that could be harmful if not handled properly.

As you might guess, do not dump any of your stored liquid down the drain. Contact your local municipality and ask about their protocol for collecting and disposing of liquid waste.

Many towns have specific dates when this type of material is either picked up at your location or collected at a central location within the municipality.

Some waste-disposal companies might also offer this service, but there might be a charge. Until you dispose of the liquid waste, be sure to store it in an appropriate, sealed container in a safe location.
