Sharpening a #11 hobby knife blade

Q: Is it possible to sharpen a #11 hobby knife blade? I seem to spend a small fortune on blades. I've never tried, but some of my friend say you can't achieve a "factory edge" when they're resharpened. Is that true?

Ken:
Just about anything is possible with the right equipment, Alan. In this case, hobby blades CAN be sharpened and can actually be made to last quite a long time.

All you need is a good sharpening stone and a suitable lubricant – both of which can be found at most good sporting-goods stores.

Another source for these items, including a tool specifically designed for sharpening hobby knife blades, is Micro-Mark, Inc. The sharpening tool #81619 is perfect for the job, and fits a variety of blade types. Micro-Mark also sells replacement whetstones and blade lubricant.

The sharpener my seem bit pricey, but over time should pay for itself and save you blade money.
